FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Troubleshooting 2025
How long will a Macerator last?
This is the most common question we get asked every day. A Saniflo will last many years if looked after properly from new despite what people say. Follow the instructions in the Saniflo handbook. Descale 2–3 times a year in hard water areas, or once a year with a salt-based softener. Avoid flushing foreign objects. Install the waste outlet pipe to pump downhill to reduce motor wear. We can remove foreign objects quickly if needed.
Why is my Sanicompact buzzing, humming, or won’t flush?
If the Sanicompact buzzes but doesn’t flush, the blade may be jammed with a foreign object. If pressing the button fills the bowl with water but it doesn’t drain, the U-bend may be blocked. Both issues are easily fixed by us.
Why is my Sanicompact activating intermittently at equal times?
If your Sanicompact activates regularly day and night, it could be due to a leaking non-return valve. Limescale or a foreign object can hold the valve open. Descaling or replacing the valve will solve it.
Why won’t my Sanicompact activate when pressing the button the first time?
If your Sanicompact has an old white single button, the air button may be worn, the air pipe may be loose, or the microswitch might be faulty. We can replace these components to restore functionality.
Why won’t my Saniflo activate when filled with water?
Check that the Saniflo has power and is switched on. Common causes of non-activation include a faulty membrane clogged with limescale, a defective microswitch, or a dead motor. Sometimes the toilet may be blocked and the macerator is not at fault. We’ll identify the exact cause.
Why is my Sanivite buzzing or humming and won’t pump out water?
The capacitor may be faulty, especially if the unit is pumping vertically. If not, the motor may be worn out. We carry spare capacitors and can often fix this in one visit.
Why is my Sanivite giving off a bad odour and smells like sewage?
Kitchen waste pumps like the Sanivite often get clogged by grease, fat, and coffee grounds. Once blocked, descaler won’t help — manual cleaning is required, and we can do that for you.
Why does my Saniflo activate when the water in the toilet bowl is very high?
Possible causes include a blocked U-bend, stiff or leaking membrane, or a faulty microswitch. A leaking membrane may need replacing, as small pinholes are hard to detect. We can reseal the unit and replace the membrane to resolve this.
Why won’t my Sanishower drain the water from the shower?
If the Sanishower has power, the fault may be a membrane, microswitch, or capacitor. We carry all of these parts. If the motor is faulty, a replacement Sanishower will be required.
Why does tissue paper come back up the toilet after flushing?
This could be due to incorrect macerator installation or a dirty chamber. The toilet outlet should be level or above the macerator inlet. If it’s too low, water can run back. Regular descaling is essential. Saniflo Descaler.
Why is my Macerator vibrating?
If your macerator is vibrating or shaking around whilst in operation and not pumping the water away, it is likely due to a foreign object caught on the macerator blade. We can strip down the machine and fix this problem for you.
Why does my Macerator keep switching on and off running intermittently?
This is likely due to a faulty membrane, switch, or both. It may also be caused by a dripping tap, shower, or bidet, or a leaking appliance. Overflowing cisterns or expansion valves dripping into the Macerator are also possible culprits. We can fix this for you.
Why does my Macerator smell or is giving off a bad odour?
Try descaling your machine with Saniflo descaler. If the odour persists, it likely needs a manual strip-down and clean. We can do this for you and recommend regular descaling afterwards.
Why is my Macerator blocked and the toilet bowl has filled up?
If the toilet is blocked, avoid flushing twice. It may be a simple U-bend blockage. If the machine is hot and unresponsive, the blade may be jammed. We can strip it down and repair it.
Why does my Macerator leak out of the air vent on top?
This could be due to a shrunken outlet pipe or the machine being overwhelmed by water due to a faulty switch or worn motor. We can replace the switch and membrane or advise if a new unit is needed.
Why is my Macerator not working or activating?
Check the fuse, power supply, and that the machine is not switched off or in thermal cut-off mode. If it still doesn’t activate after cooling, the motor might be jammed. We can investigate and fix this.
Why does my electric keep tripping out when the Macerator is activated?
This usually indicates a faulty internal connection or water ingress in the motor. We’ll inspect it to determine if a repair is possible before recommending a new unit.
Why is my Macerator foaming out of the air vent on top?
Excess soap or bleach causes foaming. Dilute the contents and reduce cleaning product use in future. Use minimal toilet cleaner and descale regularly.
Why is my Macerator blocked and water backed up in the shower basin bidet and bath?
If multiple fixtures are blocked, the Macerator may be connected to all of them. Avoid using them until we investigate to prevent flooding. We’ll remove the water and repair the issue.
Why can’t I descale my Saniflo with bleach or kettle descaler?
Only Saniflo Descaler has the correct ingredients to remove limescale. Bleach and toilet cleaners won’t work and can damage the motor. Always use a recommended descaler. Saniflo Descaler Instructions.
